Auto Assault Sent To Junkyard
Single player videogames don't die, even the bad ones.
If your aunt had bought you Nagano Winter Games '98 on the PS2 when it came out, you'd have played it a couple times to make moms happy, quickly realized the controls were ass, then put it on your shelf to gather dust until some yard sale in the far future when an annoying kid who collects ancient, retro videogames will pick it up for fifty cents to add to his collection. But it's not like you could never revisit the splendor and majesty of that olympics world. It's always there for you, waiting on your little PS2 disc.
Not so with MMOs--when people stop playing those games, whole worlds die.
So it shall be with car based multi-player game Auto Assault.
NCSoft announced yesterday that "The service will close at midnight on August 31, 2007. As of today, any player currently in the service with an active billed account will not be billed again."
Okay, the game is, by most accounts, mediocre. The landscape is sparse and badly designed. The crafting system is too complicated. The small number of other players made trading for rare ingredients a hassle. But still, there are people for whom Auto Assault is their world. Where their friends live. Where they go to have fun, or blow off a stressful day at work. After sacrificing hundreds (or thousands) of hours to his game, what will the most 'leet Auto Assaulter do on September 1st? Roll up a level one gnome in Warcraft
