Microsoft Hints At Future of Gaming
Recently, Microsoft CEO Bill Gates and Apple helmer Steve Jobs met to talk about the future of computing. During the discussion, Gates dropped some very interesting hints about the future of the Xbox platform: Video Recognition.
During the Next Gen race, Microsoft has stayed firm in its potion that motion sensing technology, like that utilized by the PS3 and Wii, isn't worth the development money, because it doesn't necessarily bring you deeper into the gaming experience.
What Gates would like in the future is the ability for people and everyday objects to interact with the system via a camera. The computer would be able to track your motion, thus putting whatever you do, into the game. Gates explained:
"Software is doing vision and so, you know, imagine a game machine where you're just going to pick up the bat and swing it or the tennis racket and swing it."
The upcoming PlayStation Eye sort of incorporates the idea of video recognition, but not at the level of functionality Gates is talking about. Perhaps the next generation of Xbox cameras will allow users to really get in the game.
