Analysts Look at PS3's Long Term Plan
There's a war on. Not that one... the console war. The contenders: the PS3, the Wii, and the Xbox 360. DFC Intelligence, a market research and consulting firm for the videogame industry, has taken a look at the console war and decided that Sony's long-term strategy with the PlayStation 3 may pay off.
"Sony has historically been slow out of the gates with their video game hardware systems, but their slow and steady pace has served them well in the long term."
DFC believes that this generation has just begun and that Sony's decade long strategy may end up paying off, but they warn that without a price drop for the holidays the PS3 may never reach this point. Sony believes that comparisons should not be made between them and Nintendo because the audiences for the PS3 and Wii are completely different.
As far as the Xbox 360 goes, DFC doesn't feel like they did enough to strengthen their lead when the PS3 launched. They even say that while Gears of War was a huge hit, it didn't attract many non-Xbox owners to the system. Furthermore, they believe that the 360 Elite hurts Microsoft because it brings the price more in line with the PS3, which consumers may feel has more features, even though there is still a lack of A+ games.
They warn that 3rd party developers and publishers need to hurry and get their Wii games out the door because by the time they are done the initial excitement over the system and its unique controller may have subsided. DFC also says that FPS games should always go to the Xbox 360 even if the system isn't selling well because its owners are typically FPS junkies.
They then bring up Paris Hilton for no reason in an article that shouldn't even make a reference to celebrities. Is the PS3 future-proof, where the 360 will lag behind? Will the Wii continue to capture the non-hardcore audience and will they buy enough games to keep Nintendo's profits up? Tell me what you think.
