Government Debates Taxing Virtual Goods
Bend over, Abigail May! Here comes the IRS!
Because the federal government loves you...and your money...Congress and the IRS are considering taxing virtual goods exchanged in videogames.
Currently, virtual goods are bought and sold free of any sort of tarrif. Before the boom in MMOs, these transactions were of little concern to the government because there weren't many of them and the revenue wasn't there. Now that virtual goods are a recognized industry generating thousands of dollars in business each week, the government wants in on that action.
With this new virtual tax, it's not so much a matter of if, but when. It'd be silly for the government to pass up an opportunity to tax you at 20 or 30%, obviously.
